Positron Emission Tomography
PET scanning utilises radiotracers to detect neural activity, and is a complementary technique to fMRI, providing the same spatial resolution and avoiding problems of acoustic noise and signal loss.
Example 1: Sophie Scott and colleagues study the neural basis of speech perception using PET and fMRI
(see picture below). They use novel forms of speech such as noise vocoded
speech to help control for aspects of the speech
signal. They also use transformations that remove the intelligibility
from speech without alerting the acoustic structure (example of spectrally rotated speech ). The transformations are carried
out with Praat and Matlab.
