Near Infra-red Spectroscopy

The caps are used to measure blood flow in the brain by shining weak lights through the skull and computing the reflectance. Brian Butterworth and colleagues are using this device to discover which areas of the brain are most active when carrying out simple number tasks, such as estimating or comparing the number of objects in a display. The left hand disk shows oxygenated blood in red and deoxygenated blood in blue in the left hemsiphere during one of these tasks.
